How to Pack Yarn for Moving

If you are anything like me, when you consider moving across country or just across town, one of your first thoughts - after all the "big" thoughts - is how am I going to move all this yarn???

And if you are down sizing majorly, you may also wonder how and where you are going to store your yarn stash.

We recently moved out of our home into a townhouse while we build on our land in the country. Needless to say, I don't have room for all my yarn - I needed to store some of it!

I usually store my yarn in our home in bookcases so I can see what I have and access it when I need it. No room for more than one of these bookcases in our small townhouse.

So - I researched some of the best ways to pack and store yarn. Here's what I discovered:

If your stash is small and your move a short distance, just pack in cloth bags, like canvas weekend bags or even reusable grocery sacks. The handles make them easy to carry and you can certainly store them short term in these bags.

When yarn is shipped to you it often comes in cardboard boxes. This is nice because the boxes are lightweight and breathable. For a quick move, this is a good way to pack your yarn, especially if you're moving yourself. Just label your boxes!

If you are moving over a long distance and have movers helping you, stuffing a box full of yarn isn't a great idea. Yarn fibers can rub against one another and against the box and end up felting, especially if its a bumpy ride or the temperature gets really warm in the moving van.

Packing yarn in sealed Ziploc bags isn't a good idea either. The yarn needs to be able to breath. And heat, plastic and wool don't mix well!

For longer term packing and storing, I find clear plastic storage containers are the best option. Don't stuff them full, just pack them lightly. These type of containers are sealed up so bugs can't get in, compared to cardboard boxes. Plus, you can see your yarn stash and know what's in the box when moving/storing a lot of boxes at one time. These boxes are sturdy and won't be crushed.

In my research, some suggested wrapping yarn in tissue paper and putting a fabric softner sheet in the box with the yarn.

If you want to get really creative - you could use your yarn as packing material between breakable items. I didn't get that creative - I use dishtowels for packing my dishes.

I hope these suggestions are a help next time you need to relocate your yarn stash. :)
