Yarn Review: Raffia

Raffia Yarn review by Little Monkeys Design - Beach Bound Straw Bag crochet pattern

I've been seeing them everywhere - those lovely straw bags - large enough to hold everything you need at the pool or beach.

But I couldn't bring myself to purchase something that I COULD make!

So began the search for Raffia yarn, as I learned with some searching is what the straw yarn is called. It's not easy to find! Finally I found a way to order it on Amazon Jo-Ann's and Premier.

I thought the Raffia yarn would be hard to work with, since it is straw - a plant fiber. I was pleasantly surprised that it is actually quite soft and easy on your hands. After finishing an entire large bag, I have no paper cuts, which is what I was really afraid of!

As you can see in the picture above, you need to work with two strands of the Raffia at a time to get the sturdiness you will be wanting.

I decided I wanted a rectangle bottom to my bag so that it would sit flat on a surface and hold more items.

Raffia yarn is manufactured by Premier Yarns as part of their Premier Home division. It comes in several different color hues.

The Beach Bag needed to have a cute button loop and fun handles as well. That took some thinking and creativity!

I am happy with the results! Braided handles add function and style! The Beach Bound Straw Bag made from Raffia is sturdy and hold everything I need and more for the pool.

I took the Beach Bound Straw Bag with me to the beach at Hilton Head, SC to make sure it worked well for the beach too! ;)

My overall review of Raffia Yarn by Premier Home is that it is an excellent, sturdy, plant fiber yarn to work with for a crochet bag project.

This yarn comes in multiple of colors - variegated mostly in several hues. Each yarn cake is 87 yards/1.23 oz. I used 9 cakes for my Beach Bound Bag - double stranded.

This yarn isn't easy to find. I've been asked by several on Instagram when I posted pictures - "Where did you find the Raffia??" I found it on Amazon Jo-Ann's and Premier.

Have you worked with Raffia before? What were your thoughts? I'd love to make a big straw hat next summer!
