Have you every looked through a selection of acrylic yarns and thought there had to be a better option?
There is! Welcome to the world of natural fiber yarns! You won't ever look at yarn the same way again once you've had the privilege of working with a natural fiber yarn, whether it's cotton, wool, alpaca, bamboo, silk or a blend of natural fibers.
Then there is the world of recycled natural fiber yarns. This is a new and growing area of natural yarns. Basically, items, usually sweaters, made from natural fibers, and often rescued from charity shops, are unraveled by hand, washed and dried, and gently rewound into skeins ready for you to create a new handmade item. This is the ultimate of sustainability!
I recently collaborated with a recycle yarn company to create a shawl pattern highlighting her new cotton yarn collection.
Twice Sheared Sheep began as an answer to a search for beautiful and soft natural fiber yarn at a local craft store. You just won't find that kind of wonderful yarn at your local craft store. Dawn, the creator of Twice Sheared Sheep, then discovered that you could recycle yarn from sweaters. She could have all the beautiful yarn she wanted, while helping the environment too!
But what do you do when you have more gorgeous recycled yarn than you could ever have time to knit? You start a yarn match making service - matching knitters with beautiful, recycled yarns that were just begging to be hand knit into a new handmade item.
For the summer time, Dawn has released a new Cotton Collection of recycled yarns in sport and worsted weight. This collection includes 20 different colors of yarn, along with knitting and crochet patterns designed with the yarns, featuring several different designers.
I was honored to be asked by Dawn to create a shawl crochet pattern for her new Cotton Collection. Together we designed the Vintage Summer Shawl, an asymmetrical shawl of textured stripes and gorgeous lace.
I loved working with this recycled sport weight yarn! It is super soft and easy to work with, pliable in your hands and on your hook or needles. This recycled cotton yarn drapes nicely and will be perfect for wearing in the warmer weather of summer.
The Vintage Summer Shawl crochet pattern is available on Little Monkeys Design. A kit including the crochet pattern and your choice of one of the four yarn colorways is available on Twice Sheared Sheep.
Fun to crochet, and created from sustainable cotton yarn - you won't want to take this shawl off!
Whether it's this shawl or another pattern, I encourage you to consider using recycled natural fiber yarns for your next project. Our environment will thank you! ;)
