10 ways to celebrate National Crochet Month

10 ways to celebrate National Crochet Month by Little Monkey Shop - Little Monkeys Design

March is National Crochet Month and an excuse to pick up a hook and create something fun! It's also a great time to reflect back on when and why you fell in love with crochet.

I was about 8 years old when my grandmother taught me to crochet. I remember that we crocheted slippers for quite a while - no pattern, I just learned by watching and doing. As a teenager I made a few baby blankets for gifts following a pattern, though I don't remember anyone ever teaching me to read a pattern.

It wasn't until many years later when I was married and having babies of my own, that I had time and a desire to pick up a crochet hook again. This time it was a yearning to hand make something to wrap my babies in that was a work of love.

I have 5 children, so by the time baby #5 came along (16 years after baby #1!), I was in love with crochet and yarn! I think I made him 5 or 6 blankets before he was born - out of organic cotton, not the inexpensive acrylic yarns with which the rest of the baby blankets had been crocheted! I was becoming a yarny!

I also wasn't so pleased with the patterns I was finding. I changed them around quite a bit to suit me - they didn't look anything like the patterns I had started with. Finally realized I had become a designer, designing my own patterns

So now I'm in love with yarn and in designing new patterns! I Love the feel of the yarn in my hands, and I love to watch my crochet hook transform it into something new. It's a very relaxing thing to do at the end of a stressful day.

I still love to crochet baby blankets - they are the PERFECT gift and always well loved. I also enjoy crocheting items to wear or use - cardigans, ponchos, baskets, dishcloths.

It wasn't until a few years ago that I even knew there was a National Crochet Month. Are you curious to learn more? Here's a few links to get you started.
